We have 400
breeding females with 60 males, and allways about 700 pelters in our
stables.
We have decided to
work for extrem high quality animals with fewer animals instead of large
scale breeding. This way we can control all processes in the breeding
ourselves.
The stables
are set up with plenty space and air around the cage-lines in order to
improve the enviromental conditions for the animals.
We have
seperate stabels for breeders and for pelters so we can have diffrent
tempreture.
| |
The stabel
buildings are constructed like a normal house, with propper insulation
and ventilation.
This helps us keep a good moisture and temperature, both
summer and winter. |
Here we are about
to put up some new cage-lines in the pelters stable.
In this stable we
try to keep a tempreture around 12 Celsius. |
| |
The cages are
build together two by two in a system that makes it easy to take them out
for cleaning if nessesary.
At the end of each
row we have a roll of plasticsheet that is pulled under the row, to make it
easy and less messy to take out the manover. |
We have made our
own software to control the breeding. Its a Lotus Approach database.
Here we can take
out all the nessesary statistics. |

This is a special
project.
We have put up 16
big cages - 100x60x120 cm - and in each cage lives an entire family with 4 -
5 females and one male.
We have worked
with them for 1½ years now to measure the breeding results.
The project is not
yet finished, put we can tell that the birthrate is better and the
mortallity is lower. |
But there are also
different problems.
Its difficult to
control the breeding - where does the offspring belong?
And we have to be
carefull putting the animals together in families.
Not all animals
like each other.
This is one
example on the effort we make to try to develop new ways and methods to
improve the chinchilla breeding. |
